Additional Information

Abner Rhoades:
Census: 1850, Carrol County, Tennessee
Moved: 1860, To Jack Co., Texas

Notes:
Excerpts of History of Jack Co., Texas e-mailed to me by Carlian Pittman, December 9, 1999.

"...Around 1860 Abner Rhoades brought his mother and the younger
children to Jack County, where he settled on the land known as Abner
Rhoades land, one mile south of the Forth Worth and Mineral wells
Intersection, (Highways 199 and 281). in 1865 he married Sarah
Elizabeth Brummett. His sister Amanda married Milton Brittain. his
brothers Robert married Nancy Johnson, Francis married Dorothy Ann
Atkinson, and Moses married Sarah J. Lauderdale. Francis, Robert and
Joel Rhoades died in the ealry 1870's and are buried in Jacksboro by the
side of their mother, Sarah Jane Fleming Rhoades. I have been told
Moses Rhoades settled at Gertrude, Jack County, Texas. So far I have
not been able to contact a descendant of his. Can anyone help me on his
descendants?
Abner and Sarah Elizabeth Rhoades raised thirteen children: Abner
Jr., Josephine, Lansing, John, Austin, Alice, hattie, Marshall, Thomas,
Quincy, Gertrude, Maude and Virginia.
Thomas married Mattie Anderson. After the death of his father and
mothe he bought the farm from the rest of his brothers and sisters. he
raised six children there: Lura, C.B., Eura, nealie, R. B., and
Armellia.
R.B. (1815-1977) married Mildred Ulala Smith in 1933. They had
three children as follows:
1. Larry Charles Rhoades (Mar. 9, 1939-Aug. 21, 1975) Married
patricia Sue Ethridge. they have two children: robyn sue and Renne
Anne. He died with cancer and is buried in Austin Memorial
Gardens,Austin, Tx. he worked for the State in the Drug Rehabilitation
Division, at Austin.
2. Terry Glenn Rhoades, Sr., was born Jan. 14, 1946. he married 1.
Earlene Leach. They have two children: Terry Glen,Jr. and Melissa Lee.
He married second to Billie Mayfield Smith Miles. She has two children:
Ron Smith and Jennifer Miles. After the death of his grandfather, Terry
then bought the odl Abner Rhoades farm fromthe heirs. So the land Abner
Rhoades settled on around 1860 still remains in the Rhoades name today
1983. Terry is a stockman.
3. Sue Ann Rhoades was born De. 8, 1947. She married John Wayne
Burnside. They have one daughter, Jalayna Sue. In 1983 they are living
in Azle, Texas. Sue Ann works for the Texas Department of Human
Resources.

Uncle Abner Rhoades, as told to me by Everette Abernathie.

As far as I can learn, Uncle Abner and Aunt Sarah Rhoades were the first
settlers in Groveland Community. They were here during the time of indian depradations. They had several horses tolen. One of their relatives owned a valuable race horse. Knowing that Indians were in the vicinity, the settlers would gather in one neighbors house for the night in order to help protect each other. They put the race horse by the log house, where they lived, with a rope around his neck and put the rope through a crack in the wall, and tied it to the owner's arm, so they could feel the rope during the night. To their surprise the next morning the rope had been cut and tied to a fence post and the race horse stolen by the Indians".
